TL;DR
We built a searchable, structured directory platform for Charlotte Is Creative that organizes grants, gigs, venues, workspaces, workshops, and a curated artist directory into one navigable system for the Charlotte region.
The mission
Charlotte’s creative scene is dense, fragmented, and hard to navigate if you do not already know the “right people” and “right places.” CLT Creative Compass exists to centralize discovery: people, places, organizations, services, and opportunities that help creatives build careers and help businesses find collaborators.
It is explicitly positioned as a cultivated guide from Charlotte Is Creative for working artists and creatives in the Charlotte region.
The challenge (what most org sites get wrong)
Most nonprofit and community directories fail in predictable ways:
- They publish lists, not systems. No structure. No retrieval.
- Content becomes stale because updating is painful.
- “Search” exists, but does not help users make decisions.
CLT Creative Compass needed to behave less like a brochure and more like a maintained platform.
What Four Eyes built
1) A directory architecture that matches real-world intent
The site is organized around the actual questions users have, with clear directory sections including:
- Grants & Open Calls
- Paid Gigs / Employment
- Venues
- Creative Workspaces
- Workshops | Networking
- Artist Directory (CLT Creative Compass)
This is not “content.” It is information architecture designed for repeated use.
2) Filtering and sorting where it matters most
For time-sensitive opportunities like grants and open calls, the platform supports filtering and deadline-based sorting, so the directory works like a tool, not a blog post.
3) A curated Artist Directory with category depth
The Artist Directory is built as a curated dataset, explicitly noting that Charlotte Is Creative has worked with, funded, or previously recommended the listed creatives and organizations. It also supports deep category browsing (example categories include theatre, photography/videography, muralist, web designer, content creator, and more).
4) Account and dashboard access for ongoing management
The site includes login access so authorized users can manage accounts and content through a dashboard workflow.
5) A clear operational model and credibility signals
The site is presented as made possible by support from the Knight Foundation, and Charlotte Is Creative is identified as an independent nonprofit 501(c)(3).
A lot of agencies can ship a pretty homepage
Fewer can build a system that:
- Handles structured content types across multiple categories
- Requires ongoing updates without breaking
- Prioritizes findability and decision support
- Represents a real Charlotte organization with a clear public mission
This is what businesses and nonprofits in Charlotte actually need when the website is not “marketing,” but operations.
