GUIDES / AI BUILDER OR STUDIOCHARLOTTE, NC · EST. 1998
An honest guide

When an AI website builder is enough. And when it is not.

Anyone can generate a website now. Sometimes that is all you need, and we will say so. Here is how to tell which side of the line you are on, what you actually get either way, and how to protect yourself if you use a builder.

The short answer

A builder is enough when the site only has to exist. It is not enough when the site has to earn.

If your website mostly has to confirm you are real, a builder does that well and cheaply. If it has to bring in calls, bookings, donations, or sales the business depends on, the things that decide whether it does are exactly the things a builder cannot supply: judgment about what the site should do, structure that search engines trust, forms that are tested, and a person who notices when something breaks.

Most businesses already know which one they are. The rest of this page is for the ones in the middle.

Which side of the line

Use the builder if the left column is you. Call a studio if the right one is.

A builder is enough when

  • You need a site this month for a few hundred dollars, and it mostly has to confirm you are real
  • Customers come from referrals, a marketplace, or a storefront, not from search
  • You have one page of content and no plans to add more
  • The site does not need to connect to anything: no CRM, booking, member area, or payments beyond a button
  • You are testing an idea and may not be doing this in a year

If that is you, use the builder. Keep the domain registered in your own name and come back when the site has a job to do.

It is not enough when

  • You compete for search traffic against established local businesses
  • The site has to convert: a form that must reach the right person, a booking flow, a donation path, a checkout
  • The site has to connect to the systems you already run
  • You will add content regularly and need it to be found
  • You care who owns it, and whether you can leave with your content
  • Your customers can tell it was generated, and it costs you credibility on every visit

Two or more of these and the builder is the expensive option, because you will pay for it twice.

Side by side

What you actually get.

Five things that keep the door open.

Plenty of our clients started on a builder, and it was the right call at the time. The move to a real build went smoothly because they had done these.

01

Register the domain yourself

In an account you own, then point it at the builder. Never let the builder register it for you.

02

Test every form

Submit it and check the email arrives. Then test it again next month.

03

Turn on analytics

And look once a month. If nobody arrives, the site is not doing its job, and it is better to know.

04

Write down your page addresses

When you move to something better, each one needs a redirect, or you lose whatever rankings you built.

05

Check you can export your content

If you cannot, you do not own it.

The middle path

Not sure which side of the line you are on? Send the address.

We will tell you honestly whether the site you have is enough, whether it can be kept and fixed, or whether it needs to be rebuilt. No obligation to hire us for any of it. If the honest answer is that a builder is right for you, that is what you will hear.

Already built one with AI and it is not working? We take those on. Curious how we know where the tools stop? We ran the experiment on our own site.

Questions

What people ask before choosing.

No. They are good at producing a competent site quickly and cheaply. They are weak at the part that decides whether the site works: judgment about what it should do, structure search engines trust, tested forms, and someone responsible when it breaks. For a site that only has to exist, that weakness does not matter. For a site that has to earn, it is the whole game.

Yes, and many of our clients did. The move goes smoothly if the domain is in your name, your page addresses are written down so they can be redirected, and your content can be exported. Check those three before you commit.

Every day, for drafts, research, and the repetitive parts of a build. That is how we know exactly where it stops. A person here decides what the site should do, checks every claim, and answers when you call.

Our projects start at $5,000 and are quoted in writing after a short call. The quote lists what is included, what is not, the schedule, and the price.
